Gov. Gary Locke to Celebrate 150 Years of Washington

Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement in observance of the territorial sesquicentennial of Washington state on Mar. 2, 2003:

“One hundred fifty years ago today, President Millard Fillmore signed legislation creating the territory of Washington.

“Washington, as a territory and a state, was settled by people who traveled across the continent to begin new lives and joined the Native Americans who lived here for centuries before.

“These pioneers brought the notion of independence and created our state government based on the best ideals of our nation.

“Let us honor the early settlers of the region and celebrate this historic occasion in commemorating the territorial sesquicentennial of our beautiful state of Washington.”
