Gov. Gary Locke Touts Success of Economic Development Trip to China and Singapore

Gov. Gary Locke returned today from a six-day economic development trip to China and Singapore, confident it will result in more business for Washington companies.

“We are very encouraged by the meetings we had with top-level government officials and business leaders in both countries,” Locke told reporters at Sea-Tac Airport today. “This trip laid a firm foundation that I expect will result in more business for Washington state companies and eventually more jobs for our citizens.”

The governor promoted Boeing jets in China and Washington companies for work on the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The governor also stopped in Singapore to build connections for Washington companies and institutions involved in the biotechnology and life sciences industries.

Locke traveled to Beijing Dec. 1-4 with Boeing Commercial Airplanes President and CEO Alan Mulally to promote trade and mark the 30th anniversary of Boeing’s business relationship with China. They also met with Chinese government officials and airline customers to promote the sale of more Boeing jets, which translates into more jobs in Washington state.

“Boeing has opened up trade with China for our state and for our country,” Locke said. “It was important to mark this impressive 30-year milestone and further strengthen our trading relationship with China.”

While in Beijing, Locke and Martha Choe, director of the state Department of Community Trade and Economic Development, met with the head of the 2008 Olympics Organizing Committee to advocate the participation of Washington companies in the planning, construction and management of the games.

“The 2008 Olympics are a great way for more Washington companies to do business in China,” Choe said. “China is an important trading partner for our state and we need to do all we can to continue to expand that relationship. I am encouraged by our meetings here this week.”

Locke and Choe traveled to Singapore Dec. 5 and 6 to promote collaborations between Singapore and Washington research institutions and companies in the biotechnology and life sciences industries.

“Washington state companies are on the cutting edge of biotechnology, an industry that’s growing in Singapore,” Locke said. “We can build on the relationships we formed this week, and that will ultimately mean more business for Washington companies and jobs for our citizens.”

Washington is the third leading U.S. exporter to Asia. It is the second leading U.S. exporter to both Mainland China and Singapore. In 2001, Washington’s exports totaled $2.9 billion to China and $3 billion to Singapore.
