Gov. Gary Locke’s Statement on Longshoremen Lockout

Gov. Gary Locke today issued the following statement on the lockout of West Coast longshore and warehouse workers:

“This lockout is unnecessary. Longshoremen have been working without a contract for some time, and progress in the negotiations has been made, albeit slowly.

“This lockout will hurt consumers and our economy, especially the stores and businesses across the country that depend on the loading and unloading of goods at our ports.

“I strongly urge both sides to return to the bargaining table and negotiate in good faith.”
