Gov. Locke applauds new Seattle-based Coast Guard rapid reaction force

“I am very encouraged by the federal government’s decision to establish a Seattle-based Coast Guard Marine Safety and Security Team. As I have stated in the past, Washington, with its extensive coastline and busy seaports, needs immediate and long-term commitment from the federal government to bolster port and waterway security.

“The new Coast Guard unit, one of only two in the nation, will consist of six vessels with 100 highly skilled crew. The unit has the capability to be deployed nationwide at short notice and is designed to conduct harbor patrol and protect naval and maritime installations. Their Seattle deployment, starting in early July, is a positive step to improve port security and is great news for Washington state.

“I want to thank Senator Patty Murray for her role in developing the Coast Guard unit. Her leadership on the issue was critical to the team’s deployment to Seattle.

“Together with the Washington State Committee on Terrorism and the state’s 10th Civil Support Team, which helps local authorities assess and respond to chemical, biological and radiological incidents, the Coast Guard unit is a great resource in addressing the threat of terrorism in our state.”
