Locke honors Washington Scholars of 2002

OLYMPIA — Calling this year’s top high school seniors the “best examples of Washington’s bright future,” Gov. Gary Locke today challenged 147 Washington Scholars to keep their goals high and their dreams alive.

Locke was the keynote speaker at today’s luncheon honoring the state’s top high school seniors, named Washington Scholars. The students have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, leadership ability and community service.

The governor said the scholars are “living, breathing examples of what’s great about our state,” and he applauded their dedication to improving the world around them.

“These young people and their drive to succeed represent the best our high schools have to offer,” Locke added. “If we're lucky, they'll choose to stay here and help us build a better Washington.”

The Washington Scholars program, administered by the Higher Education Coordinating Board in cooperation with the Association of Washington School Principals, honors the accomplishments of three high school seniors from each of the 49 legislative districts in the state.

Washington Scholars receive state grants that are approximately equal to four years of undergraduate resident tuition at the state’s public universities. They may use the grants to attend any public or independent college or university in the state.

Statewide, high school principals nominate the top 1 percent of their graduating senior classes as scholar candidates. A selection committee of high school principals and college admissions staff reviews the candidates’ applications to select the top four students in each legislative district, naming three as scholars and one as an alternate. This year, more than 650 students were nominated.
