Gov. Locke’s statement on federal assistance for laid off Boeing workers

“Today’s announcement that the U.S. Department of Labor has approved the Trade Act Assistance Certification to support laid-off Boeing workers is wonderful news.

“Last October I sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Labor requesting such assistance from the federal government for Washington workers displaced by the events of September 11.

“With today’s certification by the federal government, Boeing workers laid off since February 25, 2002, through the end of this year will received training benefits including tuition and income support.

“In addition to these funds, two weeks ago the federal government released a $15 million National Emergency Grant for unemployment retraining benefits to assist laid off aircraft manufacturers, direct suppliers and airline workers directly impacted by the events of September 11th.

“I want thank the state Employment Security Department, the State Labor Council, Senator Maria Cantwell and Representative Jennifer Dunn for their help to secure this assistance.”
