Locke names Fukai as General Administration director

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today named Rob Fukai as director of the Department of General Administration.

Fukai, 52, has served in three vice president roles at Avista Corporation in Spokane since 1985 – as vice president for human resources and corporate services, operations, and external relations.

“I look forward to having Rob Fukai join our administration,” Locke said. “His experience as manager of a large corporation makes him the ideal person to lead the state Department of General Administration. Rob also has shown terrific leadership on numerous community and state boards. His many talents will serve us well in these challenging times for state government.”

Locke appointed Fukai to the Washington State University Board of Regents in 1997 where he currently serves as board president. He also served nine years on the Spokane School Board.

“I believe my private sector experience gives me some important tools as I take on this new challenge in state government,” Fukai said. “I’m excited to get started in my new role and look forward to challenging and rewarding times at General Administration. It is a privilege to join Governor Locke’s team.”

Fukai serves on the board of the Washington Foundation for Early Learning. He is in his second term on the Washington Commission for National and Community Service and he sits on the Council for Public Legal Education.

Fukai graduated with distinction from Washington State University in 1972. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Accounting.

Fukai will earn $103,000 per year. His appointment begins February 8.
