Gov. Locke’s statement on potential terrorist attacks

“When federal officials notified us of the discovery in Afghanistan of Space Needle photos, we immediately contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI assured us that based on its current information Washington state is not a target of terrorist attacks.

“We have been working closely with federal officials, including the FBI and the Office of Homeland Security, to stay abreast of any terrorist threat. We have taken all necessary precautions in cooperation with federal and local authorities.

“I assure Washingtonians that our state is well prepared to prevent and respond to a terrorist attack.

“In January 2000, I formed the Washington State Council Committee on Terrorism bringing together more than 40 local, state and federal agencies to address the threat of terrorism in Washington state. In addition, the Washington National Guard’s 10th Civil Support Team was certified by the Department of Defense to help local authorities to assess and respond to chemical, biological and radiological incidents.

“I also emphasize the need for passage of our anti-terrorism package, including the bill that exempts from public disclosure national security records and briefings.”
