DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL & HEALTH SERVICES, Social Service Payment System (SSPS) Year 2000 Conversion Project Team
The SSPS authorizes payments to client service providers who care for more than 100,000 DSHS clients. This team has determined that conversion could best be accomplished by using existing state employees. The plan to hire a consultant was scrapped, saving the Department $1,000,000. In addition, the team's efforts moved the conversion project from four months behind to four months ahead of schedule. This was one of the first major state systems to complete the Year 2000 conversion process.

EMPLOYMENT SECURITY DEPARTMENT, Spokane-Wenatchee Fraud Prevention Pilot Program Team
The Office of Special Investigations established a pilot project with the Wenatchee Job Service Center. Staff, employers, and claimants were educated, and telephone interviews were used to increase audits and investigate potential fraud.

Results: There was a 30% reduction in the incidents of fraud during the past 12 months, an increase of 50% in the cases covered, reduction in travel time and costs, and a savings to the trust fund of $98,002.

DEPARTMENT OF RETIREMENT SYSTEMS, Remittance Advice Statements Project Team

Remittance Advance Statements Project Team MemberOf the 77,400 retirees that were receiving monthly direct-deposit remittance advice statements, 79% wanted to receive them only when there was a change or not at all.In response, the Department replaced the monthly procedure with one that reflects a move from a "one size fits all" approach to one that offers options and is customized to the customers' needs.
This change will save $176,000 over the course of a year, which is being used to pay for a toll-free phone line that will increase retirees' access to DRS services.
