Governor's Salmon Efforts

Bob Nichols, Senior Natural Resources Policy Advisor from the Executive Policy Office, has agreed to take on the Governor's salmon advisor duties. Bob will supervise the Salmon Recovery Office and lead a state interagency workgroup to resolve outstanding issues surrounding our salmon efforts. Chris Drivdahl from the Salmon Recovery Office has agreed to increase her responsibilities in assisting Bob with this effort.

The Governor intends that we not slow down in our salmon recovery work and that we push ahead aggressively for results. (Marty Brown, Chief of Staff - September 15, 2003)

The Governor’s Salmon Recovery Office (staff list) was established by the Legislature through the Salmon Recovery Planning Act (Engrossed Substitute House Bill 2496). The Salmon Office’s role is to coordinate and produce a statewide salmon strategy; assist in the development of regional salmon recovery plans; secure current and future funding for local, regional, and state recovery efforts; and provide the Biennial State of Salmon report to the Legislature.

From 1997 through 2002, the office used the Joint Natural Resources Cabinet (JNRC or Joint Cabinet) as the formal institutional framework to promote interagency coordination, communication, and policy direction on environmental and natural resource issues. Another forum, the Government Council on Natural Resources, also advised the office. These groups are now being restructured to provide better service to agencies and constituents.
