Introduction:
This collection consists of 500 black and white negatives created between 1937 and 1945, and used by the Washington State Progress Commission to promote tourism in Washington. Images include men and women enjoying natural wonders, parks, and recreational activities throughout the state.

The Washington State Progress Commission was created by Chapter 134, Laws of 1937. The Commission's functions were primarily promotional and informational in nature, and in this regard it was the forerunner of the Department of Commerce and Economic Development. The Commission was abolished in 1945 (Chapter 173, Laws of 1945) and its functions were merged with those of the State Planning Council to become the Division of Progress and Industrial Development of the Department of Conservation. In 1957 the functions of the Commission were transferred to the Department of Commerce and Economic Development.

This collection of images was transferred by the Department of Commerce and Economic Development to the Washington State Archives in 1988, along with General Correspondence and Subjects Files of the Progress Commission.
