Community and Technical College
System
Owned Facilities by County - 1997-99
|
Capital Overview
Washington's community college system was established in 1967
to provide for a state system of community colleges separate from
both the public secondary schools and four-year institutions.
The Community and Technical College Act of 1991 merged six vocational
institutions into the system. Each college district in the state
is required to offer comprehensive educational, training, and
service programs to meet the needs of both the communities and
students served. These services are currently provided through
a system of 27 community colleges and five technical colleges
across 29 districts covering the entire state.
Key capital budget challenges facing the community and technical
college system arise from the growing number of people to be served,
changes in the types of facilities required to address programmatic
shifts required by changes in the work force, and the need to
maintain aging infrastructure and facilities.
Capital Plan Highlights
- Funds are provided to construct the first phase of the University
of Washington branch campus and the Cascadia Community College
collocated campus in Bothell.
- Funds are provided to undertake construction of five facilities
designed during the current biennium.
- Predesign funds are provided to initiate a new series of projects
to be completed in the future.
- Authority is provided to use alternate financing to accomplish
seven projects statewide.
- Funds to accomplish minor repairs and improvements, upgrade
utilities and infrastructure, and respond to emergency needs will
be distributed to all colleges.
