Project Map

Capital Overview

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission operates a diverse system of state parks and recreational sites. Currently, the Commission directs the management of over 250 different properties statewide, providing camping opportunities, access to many of the state's rivers and lakes, saltwater shorelines, ocean beaches, and day use hiking options. In 1995, nearly 53 million visits were made to Washington's state park system.

The component parts of the state parks system represent an array of buildings, recreation facilities, roads, and supporting infrastructure. The list includes over 4 miles of moorage floats and docks, 1,300 buildings, nearly 14,000 campsites and picnic areas, 700 miles of trails and another 670 miles of roads. Unseen but vital are literally thousands of miles of water, power, and sewer lines.

As the state's population has increased and the number of annual park visits grown, maintaining the quality of the park system has become a significant challenge. Many facilities in prime locations are being over-utilized by people eager to enjoy the state's unique parks and nature areas. A substantial backlog of preservation and renewal projects need attention. Each year the parks system suffers a number of failures of buildings or infrastructure for which emergency repairs must be made - often at the expense of other planned projects.

Statewide Roadway Preservation
Statewide, park roads are deteriorating due to age and use. Road surfaces are cracking and potholes are forming. In some instances, roadways have failed to the point where the safety of the public is jeopardized. Many of these roads and adjoining parking areas are used by local transit authorities and public school buses as transit stops. This funding request will repair state park roads, guardrails, parking areas, and striping. Work will be completed at Moran, Cama Beach, Riverside, Steamboat Rock, Damon Point, and Deception Pass state parks.
