Owned Facilities by County - 1997-99 |
Capital Overview
Western's main campus supports 20 academic buildings, 19 residential housing and food service facilities, and about 20 academic and service support facilities of varying size. The Bellingham campus measures 195 acres, including Sehome Arboretum, making Western the smallest of Washington's state universities in physical size. Property owned off-campus includes the Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes, the Lakewood Recreational Center on Lake Whatcom, and other small parcels in Whatcom County used for environmental and aquatic analysis.
The general condition of academic buildings is good, but common problems in aging academic facilities are evident in the inadequacy of heat and ventilation systems, insufficient electrical systems, and seismic upgrade requirements.
Western recently developed the framework for master planning in order to maximize its use of existing facilities and space and plan for future needs.
