Capital Overview

The Evergreen State College (TESC) was established in 1967. In 1971, Evergreen opened its doors as an alternative college providing unique programs not offered at other state higher education institutions. The instructional programs are characterized by team-taught interdisciplinary studies in the liberal arts. Today, Evergreen is considered a leader in effective educational reform and is authorized to provide programs leading to baccalaureate degrees in the arts and sciences and master's degrees in teaching, environmental studies, and public administration.

Evergreen's physical plant is located on over 1,000 wooded acres; 300 of these acres are maintained to support the nearly 30 buildings constituting the campus. Ten major buildings serve as multi-use facilities for a wide range of academic activities, and most house a mixture of faculty, staff, and student offices and classrooms. Over 3,200 students attend TESC; this enrollment is expected to increase about 20 percent, to 3,800, by the year 2010.

Although TESC is relatively new compared to other higher education institutions, three-quarters of the capital facilities are now over 20 years old; some of the College's 20-year old infrastructure has begun to fail, or has become antiquated enough to no longer meet the demands of the campus community.
