Capital Overview
The physical plant that houses the University's on-campus programs and functions covers approximately 13 percent of the main campus area of 700 acres. There are approximately 220 on-campus buildings, of which about one-third are small temporary structures purchased and located on the campus. Total University-owned and leased space, both on-and off-campus, consists of roughly 14 million gross square feet in more than 40,000 rooms. Nearly one-third of this space is 50 years of age or older. The campus maintains its own utility systems, including 7.5 miles of underground tunnels that supply utilities to campus buildings.
Based on the Higher Education Coordinating Board Master Plan , there will be a major increase in state-wide enrollment over the next twelve years. The UW is committed to take its fair share of this projected growth, assuming the availability of adequate funding. Current projections imply an expansion of nearly 19,200 students at the Seattle and two branch campuses by 2010. About two-thirds of the growth is expected to be at Bothell and Tacoma branch campuses.
The university faces challenges in the upgrade of older and deficient space, with a shortage of modern space, and a significant backlog of renewal needs across the campus. Additional space is also required to accommodate more complex equipment, computers, diversified teaching styles, more upper-division undergraduate and graduate instruction, growing sponsored research programs, and growth in service areas not directly related to enrollment. In 1990, the University began operating branch campuses in Bothell and Tacoma in leased facilities. Design and construction funding was appropriated in 1993-95 to begin Phase I construction of the permanent Tacoma campus. The 1995-97 Biennium included design and construction funds for phase I of the Tacoma campus and predesign and design funds for a new collocated branch campus in Bothell with Cascadia Community College.
