Washington State School for
the Deaf
Owned Facilities by County - 1997-99
Capital Overview
The Washington State School for the Deaf is a fully accredited
residential school for deaf and hearing-impaired children who
are Washington State residents. A full range of educational and
recreational activities are offered in a specialized 24-hour program
tailored to the needs of the hearing impaired. The school is
located about one mile away from the Washington State School for
the Blind in Vancouver.
The campus covers a 27-acre site, including three dormitories,
a high school and elementary school, a vocational school, a gymnasium,
and a number of other support buildings. The biggest challenge
for the Washington State School for the Deaf is the replacement
of the old dormitories and the significant remodeling and renewal
of older buildings to meet the needs of hearing impaired children.
Capital Plan Highlights
- Funds are provided for the design and construction of three
new residential cottages to replace the existing facilities that
do not meet the needs of the residents.
- The plan includes funds to continue the needed preservation
of various buildings on the campus.
