Capital Overview

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) is empowered to exercise law enforcement powers and enforce traffic rules and regulations. While the primary emphasis is directed toward traffic law enforcement, the role of the department also includes assistance to the criminal justice community for justice information, identification, crime scene investigation, and drug enforcement.

The WSP has a diverse array of capital facilities including offices, a computer center, crime laboratories, commercial vehicle weigh and inspection stations, communication centers, microwave radio antenna sites, and the Washington State Patrol Academy. Included are eight district headquarters sites and 16 detachment offices. The maintenance program for the 178 facilities is centrally located in Olympia. An aggressive preventive maintenance program has been directly responsible for their overall good condition.

A total of 53 truck weighing and inspection stations monitor over two million vehicles each year on major state and interstate routes. The agency's statewide voice and data communications system relies on 56 strategically located communications sites and provides the only statewide emergency communications system. Of the six existing WSP crime laboratories, four are in leased or donated space and three are in WSP-owned facilities at Kennewick, Everett, and Tacoma. These facilities provide services on a statewide basis to the entire criminal justice community.

In 1994, the State Fire Marshall's office was transferred from the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development to the State Patrol. Capital facilities at the Fire Training Academy in North Bend require significant upgrade to accomodate the intense use of the facilities that occurs during training exercises.
