Department of Revenue

Capital Overview

The Department of Revenue (DOR) administers state tax and unclaimed property laws, provides tax policy advice to the Governor, Legislature and other state and local agencies, and oversees the administration of property tax laws.

In Fiscal Year 1996, the Department collected $9.4 billion in state and local taxes from over 400,000 registered taxpayers. This figure represent approximately 88 percent of state General Fund revenues. Under contract with local governments, DOR collects and distributes specific city/county taxes. DOR also calculates, certifies, and collects the state school property tax levy and oversees the administration of property taxation at the state and local level.

DOR employs over 1,000 staff statewide. This staff includes revenue auditors and agents, tax examiners, administrative law judges, property tax auditors and appraisers, computer systems analysts and programmers, economic analysts, accountants, taxpayer service representatives, and support staff. Approximately half of this staff work in the Olympia area, while the other half work in 16 district field offices located throughout the state.
