State Board of Education

The State Board of Education consists of eleven voting members, one elected from each congressional district by local school boards, one member elected by the directors of approved private schools, and the Superintendent of Public Instruction. By State Board of Education action, the Governor or a representative appointed by the Governor and two high school students elected annually by the Washington Association of Student Councils serve as ex officio members of the Board.

The Board has a number of statutory public education policy responsibilities. The major areas are: professional education and certification; school construction; high school graduation requirements; and school accreditation.

Funds for staff support and expenses are provided through an appropriation to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
