Locke appoints regents to University of Washington and Washington State University
OLYMPIA –
Gov. Gary Locke today appointed
Sally Jewell to the
University of Washington Board of Regents and
Steven Hill to the Washington State University Board of Regents.
Locke also reappointed
Peter Goldmark to the WSU Board of Regents.
Jewell and Hill will begin their terms immediately. Jewell, Hill and Goldmark will serve as regents until Sept. 30, 2007. All three appointments require
Washington State Senate confirmation.
Jewell, a graduate of
UW, is chief operating officer of
Recreational Equipment, Inc. A Sumner resident, she worked 19 years in the banking industry prior to joining REI. Jewell serves on the boards of REI,
Avista Corp and
Premera. In addition, Jewell is active in community and education issues and holds leadership positions with the
Alliance for Education and the
Mountains to Sound Greenway.
Hill, of Tacoma, is senior vice president for human resources at
Weyerhaeuser Company. He was named a
White House fellow in 1978 and served in the
Office of the Secretary, U.S. Department of Energy. He is a director of the
Tacoma YMCA and the
Seattle Symphony. Hill graduated from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1969 and received his master’s degree in business administration from the
University of California at Los Angeles in 1971.
Goldmark, owner and operator of the
Double J Ranch in Okanogan, has served as a WSU regent since 1996. He is a former director of the state
Department of Agriculture and a former chair of the
Governor’s Council on Agriculture and the Environment. Goldmark graduated from
Haverford College in 1967 and received a doctoral degree in molecular biology from the
University of California at Berkeley in 1971.
Regents serve as members of governing bodies for universities.
