Gov. Locke’s statement on Dr. Lee Hartwell winning Nobel Prize

“I am proud that Dr. Lee Hartwell was today named a co-winner of the 2001 Nobel Prize in medicine. His breakthrough research has helped create new methods to develop drugs to fight cancer and other diseases.

“On behalf of the state of Washington, I congratulate Dr. Hartwell on this distinguished achievement in cell-cycle research. We honor his work as genetics professor at the University of Washington and as president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. We deeply appreciate his accomplishments in advancing biomedical knowledge to eliminate cancer and other deadly diseases.

“This Nobel Prize is indeed a great honor for Dr. Hartwell, the University of Washington, the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the entire state of Washington.”
