Gov. Locke’s statement on military action

“I strongly support President Bush’s decision to strike terrorist bases and military facilities in Afghanistan. Washington state stands ready to support the President and the nation in every way possible.

“As a result of the shocking terrorist attacks on September 11, the state’s military, law enforcement and health care facilities were put on a heightened alert status. Security at the U.S. – Canadian border, patrolled by federal authorities, was also augmented. Today’s military action has not changed that heightened alert status. We will remain vigilant and maintain our ongoing readiness.

“I assure the public that local, state and federal authorities have no credible threats of retaliation against targets within Washington state.

“As the President stated today, the men and women of our armed forces represent the best of our country. I urge all Washingtonians to keep them in their thoughts and prayers. May God bless America.”
