Gov. Locke reschedules international trade mission to Japan and South Korea

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced his decision to reschedule the international trade mission to Japan and South Korea, which was originally scheduled for the last week of September.

The governor remains strongly committed to promoting bilateral trade, tourism and foreign investment. He intends to reschedule the trade mission to a more appropriate time, perhaps as early as next spring.

“After consultations with officials in Asia following last week’s horrendous terrorist attacks, I decided that it is inappropriate to pursue the trade mission at this time,” Locke said.

“In addition to the thousands of Americans missing as a result of last week’s appalling disaster, many Japanese and South Korean citizens who were in the World Trade Center are also missing,” the governor continued. “We must recognize that the grieving extends beyond America’s borders. It would not be proper for us to promote Washington goods, investment and tourism in the wake of such a shared tragedy.”

“As I said last week, the business of government will go on,” Locke said. “I rescheduled this trade mission out of compassion and sensitivity toward our Asian hosts, not out of fear or threats to our security.”

“Washington state shares a rich history with Japan and South Korea,” the governor said. “We will reschedule this trade mission for a more appropriate time next year. And in the meantime, our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims of this unspeakable act of terrorism.”
