California and Oregon to join Washington in moment of silence across the West Coast

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gray Davis of California and Gov. John Kitzhaber of Oregon will join Gov. Gary Locke tomorrow (Sept. 14) in leading a moment of silence throughout the West Coast.

The moment of silence is in concert with President Bush’s call for a national day of prayer and remembrance in memory of all the victims of Tuesday’s horrendous terrorist attacks against the United States of America.

In remarks at a memorial yesterday in Puyallup for the victims Locke said, “As a nation, we are wounded, but in the words of Lincoln, we will bind up our nation’s wounds with the strength and resolve of our people and emerge even stronger and more determined.”

“Like the victims of this horrific act, we woke up Tuesday morning to embrace the ordinariness of a late summer day,” the governor continued. “We live — but we will never forget.”

In addition to the moment of silence along the West Coast, Locke will lead a statewide day of prayer and remembrance tomorrow at Westlake Park beginning at 11:00 a.m. The park is located at the intersection of Fourth Ave. and Pine St. in downtown Seattle.

King County Executive Ron Sims, Seattle Mayor Paul Schell and religious leaders will join Locke at the memorial gathering.

The governor invites all communities statewide to hold their own gatherings and unite the state of Washington in tribute to America by simultaneously observing a moment of silence at 12:30, followed at 12:31 p.m. with the ringing of church bells.
