Gov. Locke and Superintendent of Public Instruction Bergeson announce Reading Corps grant recipients

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Terry Bergeson today announced the 2001-2003 recipients of Washington Reading Corps grants.

“Education is the top priority of my administration and the Reading Corps is fundamental in our ultimate goal of making Washington schools the best in the nation,” Locke said. “The Legislature’s investment will infuse schools with some of the resources they need to mobilize their communities. The aim is to give struggling students intensive instruction to master basic skills.”

“I strongly encourage people to invest in our future by volunteering to help our children learn to read,” the governor added. “Giving just one hour a week can make a big difference in the life of a child.”

With more than 8,000 volunteers, the WRC will continue to promote literacy following the Legislature’s approval of nearly $7.8 million to fund the Reading Corps through 2003.

Grants are being awarded to 165 applicants representing 174 schools across the state. Some schools will gain further assistance from AmeriCorps and VISTA members of the Washington Service Corps. Letters are being mailed to each school this week announcing details of the grant award.

“As our state moves forward on the path of education reform, it demands our students and schools reach higher and demonstrate their growing capabilities in content areas such as reading,” said Bergeson.

“The Washington Reading Corps not only provides more concentrated, one-on-one attention for those children struggling to read, but brings community groups and businesses into the classroom for successful collaboration with our schools,” the superintendent said. “The tutors help students experience the joy of reading and feel a sense of accomplishment.”

The grant applications were reviewed by literacy educators and representatives from OSPI, the Washington Service Corps and the Washington Commission for Community and National Service. The team assessed each application for its quality and then considered each school’s three-year reading average on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning to determine the grant award amounts.
