Locke says convention and trade center will boost revenue, investments

SEATTLE - Noting that the first phase of the Washington State Convention and
Trade Center
thrived beyond anyone's expectations, Gov. Gary Locke today
predicted the expanded center will create a wellspring of revenue for
generations to come.

Locke made his remarks while participating in the grand opening of the
expanded convention center at a noontime ceremony in Seattle.

"The convention center expansion magnifies Seattle and Washington state,"
Locke said. "It's a boost to international trade. It's a boost for
showcasing our state to citizens and business leaders from around the
globe."

The governor noted the expanded center will provide tax dollars to pay for
new schools, urban parks and public safety, investments for long-term
community building and investments that spur dividends that spur additional
investment.

In addition to generating tax revenue, Locke remarked that the convention
center has played a key role in the revitalization of Seattle's downtown
area.

"The convention center remains the lead entity to stimulate additional
private investment in downtown," the governor said.

The governor congratulated supporters of the convention center for their
diligence in shepherding the project to completion.

Locke also acknowledged the artwork of Ann Gardner that will welcome
visitors through the convention center's new entrance.
