Locke announces 23 appointments to education posts

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today filled openings on the state's Higher Education Coordinating Board (HEC Board), several college boards of trustees and education-governing authorities.

Locke announced two new appointments to the state's nine-member HEC Board: Spokane certified public accountant Kristi Blake and Larry Hanson, publisher of the Herald in Everett. The HEC board is the state agency in charge of coordinating Washington's higher education policies and making recommendations to the governor and Legislature.

Wayne Ehlers, a former state legislator, of Seattle, was appointed to a new term on the Western Washington University Board of Trustees. Charlie Earl, an Everett businessman, also was appointed to the board.

Gwen Chaplin, a non-profit organization executive from Yakima, was appointed to another term on the Central Washington University Board of Trustees.

The following were appointed to technical and community college boards of trustees:

* Ruthann Kurose, of Mercer Island, Bellevue Community College;
* Edith Loyer Nelson, a state program manager from Shoreline, Shoreline Community College;
* Felix H. Anderson, a professional manager from Ferndale, Bellingham Technical College;
* Dan Wilder, a Port Angeles auto dealer, Peninsula College;
* Larry Nickell, a Moses Lake labor leader, Big Bend Community College;
* Lonna Kay Malone-Purtle, a Richland Superior Court commissioner, Columbia Basin College;
* Roger Yockey, a Woodinville labor leader, Cascadia Community College;
* Jean-Ann Batchelder, a Kirkland nurse, Lake Washington Technical College;
* Holly Echo-Hawk Middleton, a Vancouver non-profit group executive, Clark College;
* Thomas Malone , a Seattle attorney, Seattle Community College;
* John Nettleton, a Tacoma lawyer and businessman, Tacoma Community College;
* Tom Hilyard, of Tacoma, a regional director for a state agency, Bates Technical College
* James Robinson, a Bremerton businessman, Olympic College; and
* Rodney Kawakami, a Seattle attorney, Renton Technical College.

Locke appointed Gerald P. Leahy, a retired hospital president from Spokane, Heidi Stanley, a Spokane banker, and Nancy Isserlis, a Spokane attorney, to the Spokane Joint Center for Higher Education.

The governor also appointed Heyward Watson, a Seattle mortgage banker, to the Higher Education Facilities Authority.
