Locke names Charles French to Snohomish County judicial post

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today announced the selection of Charles S. French as Snohomish County Superior Court Judge.

French, 46, has practiced law in Snohomish County since 1976. He has extensive experience in general civil litigation, family law and a strong background in criminal law.

"He has a very well-rounded legal background, and was highly recommended by his peers in the Snohomish County legal community," Locke said. "He is credited with being compassionate and having extremely high ethical standards. He will make an outstanding judge."

French joins 12 other Superior Court judges on the bench, and is required to stand for election this fall to retain the post. The governor selected French from a group of 16 applicants and four finalists.

French, a partner in the Everett law firm of Meagher & French, received top ranking among the candidates from the Snohomish County Bar Association. He received the association's President's Award in 1994.

French is president of the Snohomish County Premier Development Club (youth soccer) and was a member of the City of Everett's Charter Review Committee. He is a longtime volunteer with the Everett School District and is the attorney for Snohomish County Volunteer Search and Rescue.

French graduated from Central Washington State College in 1973 and the Willamette University School of Law in 1976. He is married and has two children.

French's term begins Aug. 1. The annual salary for the position is $100,995.
