Washington governors gather to raise money for Zion Preparatory Academy

OLYMPIA — Last year a historic meeting occurred between Gov. Gary Locke and all the surviving former governors, including Albert D. Rosellini, Dan Evans, John Spellman, Booth Gardner, and Mike Lowry. This "Gathering of the Governors" is now an annual gathering and an official non-profit organization dedicated to supporting education and youth-oriented programs in Washington. The second meeting took place today and raised money for the Zion Preparatory Academy in Seattle.

"I'm very pleased to be part of such a wonderful organization advancing the cause of youth education in our state," Locke said. "It was also a great opportunity to gather again with old friends, these distinguished former governors."

Governor Evans, who chaired this year's "Gathering of the Governors," passed a special gavel to Governor Spellman at the end of the luncheon. Spellman will chair next year's charity event, which will benefit The Institute for Motivating Reading.

"I'm delighted that the "Gathering of the Governors" gives us an opportunity to help a deserving charity," said Evans. "This year I'm happy to assist Zion Preparatory Academy which has done such a remarkable job of educating at-risk young children."

The luncheon raised $50,000 for Zion Preparatory Academy. Twelve people who paid $5,000 each enjoyed a rare opportunity to meet and talk with the governors over lunch. Two of the twelve people also attended last year's event.

Zion Preparatory Academy was founded in 1982. The Academy is a private school dedicated to fostering the respect, personal responsibility, and academic skills needed for success in learning and life. The money raised will help the 500 children who are expected to participate in the Academy's programs this year. The children range in age from toddlers to eighth graders. Zion Prep's approach to education includes programs such as a challenging preschool, a well-rounded K-8 academic curriculum, before and after school childcare, and home-cooked meals served twice daily to students.
