Locke appoints Van Doorninck to Pierce County Superior Court

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today appointed Kitty-Ann van Doorninck of Tacoma to the newest judicial position on the Pierce County Superior Court.

Locke said van Doorninck will bring solid legal skills and experience to the bench.

"Kitty-Ann has earned a reputation as a consensus builder," Locke said. "She is a well-rounded person with the legal skills, demeanor and real-life experience needed to get the job done."

Van Doorninck, 40, is a Tacoma native and a magna cum laude graduate of California State Polytechnic University. She earned her law degree from the University of Puget Sound Law School in 1983. She worked for the public defender while in law school and served as deputy prosecutor for Pierce County for seven years. As first administrative deputy to the county prosecutor, van Doorninck handled personnel issues, training, budgets and city council matters. She later became a civil deputy prosecutor and works on a wide variety of tort cases.

She also is active in community organizations, including the YWCA, American Cancer Society, and Pierce County AIDS Walk.

The Tacoma City Council approved the 20th Superior Court position earlier this year, effective Oct. 12. During the 1997 session, the Washington Legislature created five new positions for Pierce County, from 19 to 24, and authorized the county to fill one of the positions this year. Two positions are effective Jan. 1, 1999 and the remaining two, Jan. 1, 2000, subject to action by the Pierce County executive and council.

Van Doorninck begins her appointment as soon as possible at an annual salary of $100,995 and must stand for election at the next general election.
