Locke fills health posts and other boards and commissions

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today announced his selections to several health posts, including the Board of Nursing Home Administrators, the Governor's Council on HIV/AIDS and other boards and commissions.

Board of Nursing Home Administrators

The board administers the licensing or registration process for administrators in the nursing home industry.

Dr. John Lee, of Seattle, retired as a diagnostic radiologist last year from the University of Washington (UW) Medical Center. He is a graduate of the school, receiving his bachelor and master degrees from UW. He developed and maintained one of the first physician-owned nursing home mobile radiology services in the state. He also is a former board member and president of the Chinese Nursing Home Society. Lee's term expires May 28, 2000.

Appointed to another term on the board is Dr. Donna El-Din of Spokane. She is a professor at the Department of Physical Therapy at Eastern Washington University. Her term expires May 28, 2003.
Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission

The commission regulates the competency and quality of nursing care professionals in the state.

Shannon Fitzgerald, of Gig Harbor, was appointed to another term on the commission. She is a certified family and pediatric nurse practitioner.

Governor's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS

The council advises the governor on HIV/AIDS-related programs and policy.

Locked appointed five members to additional terms on the council. Hugh Davis, of Spokane, assistant director at Spokane Public Schools Libby Center; Jeri Lowry, of Vancouver, a project manager for Madevco Inc.; Kelly Scott, of Seattle, a contract legal assistant for several law firms in Seattle; Pam Tollefson, of Olympia, a program supervisor for Health Education and HIV/STD Prevention for the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction; and Robert Wood, of Seattle, director of the HIV/AIDS Control Program at King County Department of Public Health.

All terms expire June 30, 2001.

Developmental Disabilities Council

The council advises the governor on issues and trends in providing services to developmentally disabled individuals.

Regina Harris, of Seattle, a parent to parent coordinator to African-Americans for the ARC of King County, a non-profit developmental disabilities organization. Harris also is a member of the National Black Child Development Institute and the Association for the Care of Children's Health.

Melinda Sperline, of Grayland in Grays Harbor County, a part-time kindergarten teacher for the Ocosta School District. She also has been a member of the Washington Special Education Advisory Council for ten years.

Locke also appointed Seattle residents Thomas Ross and Jeffrey Stout to additional terms on the council. Both terms expire June 30, 2001.
State Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities and their Families

The council advises and assists the Department of Social and Health Services and other participating agencies to coordinate, develop and implement policies related to early intervention services. New members on the council are:

Sandra Beaty, a homemaker from Spokane. She is a parent leader for the Epilepsy Parent and Family Network of Spokane.

Gredia Igama, of Seattle, a certified nursing assistant. She currently works as an administrative secretary for First African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Child Development Center in Seattle.

Dr. Jean Kelly, of Seattle, a research associate professor at the University of Washington's Department of Family and Child Nursing. She has extensive research experience in children's care and has had articles published in numerous health publications.

Dora Moreno, of Burlington, regional director of the Washington State Migrant Council. She also is a member of the Skagit County Interagency Coordinating Council and the Whatcom County Interagency Coordinating Council.

Mary Kay Quinlan, of Tacoma, a child care licensor with the Department of Social and Health Services' Office of Child Care Policy. She is also on the advisory boards of the Clover Park Technical College and Home Family Life and the Kitsap County Child Care Resource and Referral. Quinlan fill a new position on the council.

Bonnie Beardsley Sandahl, of Snohomish, a nurse practitioner at Providence General Medical Center. She also is a member of the Western Advisory Committee Health Services Board.

Millie Weers, of Spokane, a special services manager for the Spokane County Head Start/Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program. She also co-chairs a parent/staff interagency council for Spokane Public Schools District No. 81. Weers is filling a new position.
Karen Lindsay, a homemaker from Moses Lake, was appointed to another term on the council.

All terms expire Jan. 6, 2001, except for Beaty, Weers and Quinlan. Beaty's term expires Jan. 6, 2000, Weers' term is until Jan. 6, 1999. Quinlan serves as a representative of the Department of Social and Health Services.

Affordable Housing Advisory Board

The board is the principal advisory group to the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development on housing-related issues.

Locke appointed three members to another term on the board. They are: Kurt Creager, of Ridgefield, executive director for the Vancouver Housing Authority; Sharon Lee, of Seattle, executive director Low Income Housing Institute, a non-profit housing development organization; and Robert Schoos, of Seattle, vice president of business development, retail credit services at Washington Mutual Bank.

All terms expires Jan. 26, 2002.
