Governor announces three of six new student regents

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today appointed the first three student representatives ever to serve on the governing boards of their respective universities, a move he said will provide an important perspective to the decisions made by state institutions of higher education.

Acting on a list of candidates nominated by student organizations, Locke today named new student regents for the University of Washington and Washington State University, and a student trustee to the Central Washington University Board of Trustees. He said he expects to announce appointments for Eastern Washington University, Western Washington University and The Evergreen State College in the next few weeks.

Locke noted that each student regent or trustee will serve one year, as specified in legislation he signed into law earlier this year, with terms ending May 31, 1999. All will be full voting members in issues considered by their boards, except personnel matters.

"I’ve favored this move for a long time," Locke said. "Students clearly bring an important perspective to issues affecting their education and it’s important that they have a seat at the table. I’m really pleased by the quality of the candidates recommended to us by the various student organizations."

From the list of three to five candidates recommended for each institution, Locke made the following appointments.

* Jennifer Frankel, University of Washington Board of Regents. Frankel is a first-year law student at the UW School of Law, with a master’s degree in librarianship from the UW and a bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. She has been active in a variety of legal, library, and student organizations.

* Janelle Milodragovich, Washington State University Board of Regents. Milodragovich is a junior studying for a double degree in pre-law and English. She served as chief of staff for the Associated Students of Washington State University, an emergency worker for Pullman Flood Relief, and has been active in a variety of other student and community programs.

* Amy Christine Gillespie, Central Washington University Board of Trustees. Gillespie is a senior, majoring in political science and minoring in women’s studies. A 1994 graduate of Capital High School in Olympia, Gillespie has served as president of the Associated Students of Central Washington University and coordinator for the university’s flood-relief effort.
