Locke announces selections for several state boards

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today announced several appointments to state boards and commissions. Many were appointed to the panels that focus on education issues.

State Board for Community and Technical Colleges
Locke appointed two new members and appointed another to a new term on the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges. The board is responsible for preparing and submitting the budget for community and technical colleges. The appointees are:

* Mount Vernon Job Service Center Administrator Jose G. Ruiz of Anacortes, who has 28 years of experience in the employment and training field. His term expires in April 2001.

* Dr. Mark Kondo of Spokane who has served as chairman of the Educational Service District No. 101 for five years. His term expires in April 2002.

* Washington State Labor Council member Al Link of Bremerton, who was appointed to a new term on the board. His term expires in April 2002.

Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education
Locke appointed Rep. Don Carlson of Vancouver to another term on the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. His term expires in June 2001.

Community Economic Revitalization Board
Selected for the Community Economic Revitalization Board was Steven D. Evans of Walla Walla. Evans is the chief financial officer at Key Technology Inc. His term expires in September 2000.

The board works to strengthen the economies in areas of the state that have experienced high unemployment rates and to provide incentives for expansion of employment opportunities.

Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors
Recently named to the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors was Harold E. Williamson of Richland. Williamson is a chemical and nuclear engineer and owns HEW Enterprises. His term expires in July 2002.

Washington State Horse Park Authority
Shirley Coffey of Gig Harbor was appointed to a new term on the Washington State Horse Park Authority, which manages and maintains the state horse parks. Her term expires in February 2001.

Ron Dotzauer, of Seattle, also was named to the Authority. He is Chief Executive Officer and founder of Northwest Strategies, a consulting firm, and owns a quarter-horse ranch north of Snohomish. His term expires in February 2001.

Sentencing Guidelines Commission
Two new members were appointed to the Sentencing Guidelines Commission. Ronald D. Cantu, of Woodway, is a dentist and serves as chairperson for the Point Wells Annexation Study Committee in Snohomish County. His term expires in August 2000.

Joe Hawe, of Sequim, the sheriff of Clallam County since 1990, was also named to the commission. His term expires in August 2000.

Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board
Sean Shanahan of Seattle, a risk control manager for Starbucks Coffee Company, was named to the Governor's Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board. His term expires in December 2000.

Members of the board advise the governor on issues of industrial injuries and occupational diseases among employees in the state.

Securities Advisory Committee
Gary Hirata of Bellevue was recently reappointed to another term on the Securities Advisory Committee. Hirata works for a financial consulting firm. His term expires in December 2001.

The committee advises the Director of Financial Institutions on matters relating to securities and administers exams and issues licenses to securities brokers, dealers, salespeople and investment advisors.

Emergency Management Council
Mary Corso, the first woman to become a Washington state fire marshal, was named to the Emergency Management Council.

The Emergency Management Council advises the governor on all matters relating to emergency services in Washington.

Rural Development Council
Two new positions on the Rural Development Council have been filled by Donald Campbell of Port Angeles and Terry Hunt of Coulee City. Campbell is currently the general manager of Admiral Marine Works Inc. Hunt is a rancher and farmer in Grant and Douglas counties and director of legislative affairs for the State Grange. Their terms expire in December 2000.

Members of the council work to develop perspectives on rural community development issues.
