Statement of Gov. Gary Locke on Republican transportation plan

OLYMPIA - "I've believed from the beginning the Republicans would get the votes for their proposal. Still, it is a sad day for schools, for fiscal responsibility and for transportation.

"This borrow-and-spend Republican plan may not hurt our schools today, but it surely will as more children enter our schools and more people clamor for opportunity at our colleges and universities.

"The Republicans are willing to amend the spending limit for roads, but not for schools. In my view, nothing is more important than education.

"And as pressing as our transportation needs are, the Republican scheme is a cure worse than the disease. We stop building roads after five years but keep paying for 25 years. How many people would get a 25-year loan from the bank to buy a car that would last only 5 to 10 years?"
