Locke fills posts on state boards and commissions

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today announced selections for the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges, the State Board of Health, and other boards and commissions.

State Board for Community and Technical Colleges

The board reviews the community and technical colleges system's budget, disburses funds to community and technical college districts, and establishes standards for staffing, financial procedures, curriculum, degree requirements, and admission policies.

Carolyn J. Purnell, of Seattle, is a management consultant on leadership, team building, mergers, and consolidations. Her term expires April 3, 2000.
State Board of Health

The board develops state health policy.

Appointed to additional terms on the board are Margaret Pageler, of Seattle, Seattle City Councilmember; and Neva Corkrum, of Pasco, Franklin County Commissioner.

Both terms expire July 1, 2002.

Spokane Intercollegiate Research and Technology Institute (SIRTI), Board of Directors

The board is the governing body of SIRTI.

Janet L. Gilpatrick, of Spokane, is a senior consultant for a public relations company and was chief of staff to former Speaker of the House of Representatives Tom Foley.

Patricia Irving, of Richland, is president and chief executive officer of an advanced technology company.

Appointed to additional terms on the board are Richard Hadley, of Spokane, president of the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce; and Michael D. Nowling, of Spokane, president of The Heart Institute of Spokane.

All terms expire June 30, 2002, except Irving, whose term expires June 30, 2000.

Board of Pharmacy

The board establishes policy for the practice of pharmacy including licensing, disciplinary hearings, and enforcement of laws pertaining to legal drugs.

Donna Dockter, of Seattle, is a pharmacist and co-owner of a nursing home consultant company and is the former chief pharmacist for the Seattle Indian Health Board. Her term expires Jan. 19, 2003.

Medical Quality Assurance Commission

The commission licenses and regulates the practice of the state's physicians.

Rogelio Ruvalcaba, of Federal Way, is clinical director of the Rainier School and a professor of pediatrics at the University of Washington Medical School. His term expires July 1, 2003.

Sunanda Uberoi, of Federal Way, is a private practice physician and a professor of rheumatology at the University of Washington Medical School. Her term expires June 30, 2002.

Fire Protection Policy Board

The board sets policy on fire protection matters.

Appointed to additional terms on the board are Patricia Jollota, of Vancouver, Vancouver City Councilmember; and Pam Sullivan, of Seattle, vice president of an insurance brokerage company.
Both terms expire April 15, 2002.
