Locke appoints Ken Cowsert to Snohomish County Superior Court

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today appointed Ken Cowsert as judge for Snohomish County Superior Court.

"He is an independent and well-rounded attorney with the top-notch legal skills and real-life experience necessary to become an excellent judge," Locke said. "He is clearly the right person for the job."

Cowsert replaces Kathryn Trumbull, who is resigning Aug. 27. Trumbull became Snohomish County's first female Superior Court judge in 1990.

Cowsert, 53, has served since 1995 as a court commissioner in Snohomish County, presiding over divorce, domestic violence, probate and juvenile law matters. He worked previously as a deputy prosecuting attorney for the county for 10 years. He specialized in sexual-assault and child-abuse cases. Cowsert also supervised trial teams that handled other felony prosecutions.

Cowsert was a deputy prosecutor in Cowlitz County for five years, and had a private practice for three years in Port Angeles.

Cowsert graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in 1970. He earned a law degree in 1973 from Gonzaga University. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968.

He begins his duties Aug. 30. The post carries an annual salary of $108,300.
