Statement by Gov. Locke on Vice President's speech

"While I am disappointed by the decision of the Supreme Court, I have great respect for the institution. I believe this issue would have been best resolved by a complete and accurate count of all ballots. Each state deeply cherishes the right to conduct its own elections, and I am concerned about the federal Supreme Court delving into this territory.

"But the highest court in the land has ruled and we must now stand behind the decision of the justices. It is time to move forward.

"Vice President Al Gore stood before America tonight and asked the nation to unite behind the next president. He said the partisan feeling must yield to patriotism. He reminded us we are one people with a shared history and a shared destiny.

"I agree with the Vice President. We must now acknowledge, support and stand behind George W. Bush as our next President of the United States."
