Gov. Locke identifies top goals for next four years

SEATTLE - "I want to take this opportunity to thank the people of Washington for their vote of confidence," Gov. Gary Locke announced today.

"I love this state, and I will do everything in my power to continue to make Washington the best place to live, work and raise a family," he said.

Locke outlined three of his top priorities for the next four years: education, transportation and water.

"I will not abandon our higher academic standards for our students, because I believe in our kids and I believe in our teachers," Locke said.

He went on to emphasize his plan to tackle the transportation problem.

"We will have a long-term plan that deals with our transportation needs comprehensively, a plan that recognizes we've got to have road improvements, strong public transit and ferry systems."

Locke said he will also focus on water issues.

"We are going to protect water quality in Washington. We will ensure that we have water for people and fish, for agriculture and industry, and for communities that need water to grow."

"We've gone through one of the most exciting exercises in democracy in more than one hundred years. This energy will feed and spur us on," Locke said.
