Applications for Promise Scholarships go out to schools

OLYMPIA – Gov. Gary Locke today urged parents to ask school principals about applications for Washington's new Promise Scholarships.

Applications for use by this year's public high school seniors were mailed to school principals statewide today.

"I want to make college a reality for the top students from middle-class, working families," Locke said. "Our new Washington's Promise Scholarships will do that. These scholarships will also serve as another incentive for students to work hard in school."

This year only, the top 10 percent of public high school graduates from homes in a certain income range are eligible for the scholarships. Next year, the top 15 percent will be eligible.

The two-year scholarships may be used at any accredited public or private college in the state of Washington. They were a top priority for Locke in the legislative session that ended April 25 and will be funded in the budget that takes effect July 1.

The information mailed to school principals explains the family income qualifications that apply to the Promise Scholarships. Families with an income of up to 135 percent of the state's median income will qualify. For example:

A family of two can qualify if their income does not exceed $47,199.
- For a family of three, the income limit would be $58,305.
- For a family of four, $69,410.
- For a family of five, $80,516.
- For a family of six, $91,622.
