Locke makes selections for state boards and commissions

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today announced appointments for several boards and commissions.

Skagit Valley College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

C. Thomas Moser, of Mount Vernon, is a criminal and civil litigation attorney. His term expires Sept. 30, 2005.

Grays Harbor Community College Board of Trustees

The board of trustees is the governing body of the college.

Carol Carlstad, of Montesano, is a bank manager and community leader in East Grays Harbor. Her term expires Sept. 30, 2005.

Board of Trustees, State School for the Deaf

The board serves educational needs of hearing-impaired students from throughout the state.

Pat E. Clothier, of Mount Vernon, is an interpreter, and Allie M. Joiner, of Seattle, is a community advocate for the deaf. Both terms expire July 1, 2005.

Organized Crime Advisory Board

The board advises the Governor on the activities of organized crime within the state.

The Hon. Walter Deierlein, Jr., of Mount Vernon, is a retired judge; John M. "Jack" Jones, of Olympia, is the senior deputy prosecuting attorney for Thurston County. Both terms expire July 15, 2004.

Sentencing Guidelines Commission

The Commission evaluates state sentencing policy for both the adult criminal justice system and the juvenile justice system.

Appointed to an additional term on the commission are Sheriff Joe Hawe, of Sequim, Dr. Ronald Cantu, of Lynnwood, a dentist, Elizabeth Calvin, of Seattle, and Superior Court Judge Michael Donahue, of Spokane. All terms expire Aug. 2, 2003.

Legislative Ethics Board

The board enforces state ethics legislation with respect to members of the Legislature and legislative employees.

John Bertozoff, of Redmond, is a retired teacher and former member of the Bellevue and Redmond Chambers of Commerce. His term expires Sept. 30, 2004.

Chiropractic Quality Assurance Commission

The Commission regulates the competency and quality of chiropractic health care professionals.

Dr. Nancy McCown, of Kelso, is a chiropractor. Her term expires on June 30, 2004.

Appointed to an additional term on the commission are Dr. Richard Kale, of Quincy, and Dr. David Jones, of Spokane, both chiropractors. Both terms expire June 30, 2004.

Medical Quality Assurance Commission

The Commission regulates the competency and quality of medical professionals licensed to practice medicine and surgery.

Dr. Hampton Irwin, of Spokane, is a retired obstetrician. His term expires June 30, 2004.

Emergency Medical Services/Trauma Care Steering Committee

The committee reviews regional emergency management plans and recommends changes, as well as advises on rules regarding poison information centers.

Dr. Jim Nania, of Liberty Lake. His term expires on Aug. 15, 2002.

Appointed to an additional term is Lori Taylor, of Spokane. Her term expires on Aug. 15, 2002.

Also appointed to an additional term are Dr. Lothar Pinkars, of Bellevue; Eric P. Jensen, of Seattle, and Sue Dietrich, of Vancouver. Both terms expire Aug. 15, 2003.

Family Practice Education Advisory Board

The board advises the University of Washington School of Medicine on implementing educational programs in family medicine throughout the state.

Michael Wilson, of Spokane, is the chief operating officer at Sacred Heart Medical Center. His term expires Sept. 7, 2002.

Dr. Michael Maples, of Yakima, is the president of Affiliated Family Practice Residency Network and director of Central Washington Family of Medicine. His term expires Sept. 7, 2003.

Appointed to an additional term on the board is Art Ceniza, of Mountlake Terrace. His term expires Sept. 7, 2003.

State Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities and Their Families

The council advises and assists the Department of Social and Health Services and participating state agencies to coordinate, develop, and implement policies.

Jean Kelly, of Seattle, is a research associate professor at the University of Washington, Dept. of Family and Child Nursing. Her term expires Jan. 1, 2003.

Governor's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS

The council serves as an advisory to the Governor on HIV/AIDS related programs and policy.

Romel W. Mackelprang, of Spokane, is a professor of clinical social work; Jeffrey T. Schouten, of Seattle, is an attorney-at-law. Both terms expire June 30, 2003.

Task Force on Health Care Reinsurance

The task force monitors the provisions of the Health Care Reinsurance Act.

John Pierce, of Seattle, is the vice president and general counsel for Regence BlueShield; Ree Sailors, of Olympia, is a policy advisor for the Office of Financial Management, state of Washington; Dennis Braddock, of Olympia, is secretary for Department of Social and Health Services. All terms expire Dec. 31, 2002.

Governor's Affirmative Action Policy Committee

The committee serves as a policy and review body for the state's affirmative action program.

Appointed to an additional term is Gregory Chan, of Issaquah, a professor at Central Washington University. His term expires May 31, 2002.

Appointed to an additional term are Tina Peterson, of Olympia, the Director of Personnel Board Activities for the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE), Geoffry Eng, of Spokane, a District Director of Administrative Services and Affirmative Action for the Community Colleges of Spokane, and Scott Sherman, of Seattle, a mechanical designer. All terms expire May 31, 2003.

Lewis & Clark Trail Committee

The committee advises and stimulates activities with government agencies and individuals to promote public awareness of the route traversed by Lewis and Clark on their 1804-1806 expedition.

Lauren Danner, of Olympia, is a professional journalist and an instructor South Puget Sound Community College. Her term of service is at the pleasure of the governor.

Veteran's Affairs Advisory Committee

The committee advises the governor and director of the Department of Veteran's Affairs on state programs related to veterans, their dependents and survivors.

Brownie Braunsteiner, of Tacoma, is retired from service in the U.S. Army; Ronald Springer, of Eatonville, is a retired steam ship company employee; Richard Marin, of Edmonds, is the C.E.O. of an ad agency and a Vietnam Veteran; Francis Agnes, of Everett, is an ex-prisoner of war and retired from the U.S. Air Force. Oria Berndt, of Tacoma, is a retired Non-Commissioned Officer with the U.S. Army. All terms expire July 1, 2004.

Commute Trip Reduction Task Force

The task force establishes guidelines for commute trip reduction plans.

Edward Bass, of Poulsbo, is a transportation coordinator. His term of service is at the pleasure of the governor.
