Locke requests SBA help for Thurston County

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke has asked for help from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) for businesses and individuals who have suffered damages in Thurston County from landslides and flooding that began in November 1998.

"Winter storms have left many homeowners and businesses with flooding and landslide damage that will not be covered by insurance," Locke said. "The SBA help can provide low-interest loans for businesses and individuals to help them recover from severe financial setbacks."

Preliminary damage assessments revealed more than $5 million in losses in Thurston County. The damages totaled more than $4.13 million to homes and more than $870,000 to businesses.

Locke said other counties may be added to the SBA assistance request when winter storm damage assessments are completed.

Additional information about the program can be obtained from Ben Dew, Washington Emergency Management Division, at 253-512-7076.
