Locke focuses on economic development in speech to Everett Rotary

OLYMPIA — In a speech before the Everett Rotary today, Gov. Gary Locke focused on his plans for economic development throughout the state. Locke has committed to bridging the economic divide between rural and urban areas of Washington.

"While Washington's economy is strong, we can't let the health of the Puget Sound economy steal the strength from our rural communities. We need to make sure all businesses in Washington have an equal chance to not only survive, but grow, and keep their family-wage jobs here," Locke said. "We'll do that by working together to build and improve our transportation, high technology, workforce training and telecommunications systems. Only by working together can we keep our rural economies on track toward a prosperous future."

Locke is discussing his economic development plans in a variety of forums this week. He spoke yesterday at the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and will speak again Thursday at the Community Education and Lifelong Learning Center in Aberdeen.
