Locke appoints citizens to boards and commissions

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke today announced his selections for the Columbia River Gorge Commission, the Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission, the Housing Finance Commission and several other boards and commissions.

Columbia River Gorge Commission

This interstate Oregon-Washington commission works with the U.S. Forest Service to plan for and oversee the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Wayne E. Wooster, of White Salmon, is an environmental manager for an aluminum company. His term expires June 12, 2004.

Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission

The commission ensures that state programs are providing necessary assistance to the Asian Pacific American community.

Habib M. Habib, of Marysville, is a certified public accountant. His term expires June 30, 2003.

Tony Lee, of Seattle, is the legislative director of the Washington Association of Churches. His term expires on June 30, 2002.

Housing Finance Commission

The commission issues revenue bonds and participates in federal, state and local housing programs to ensure additional funds are available at affordable rates to help provide low- and moderate-income housing throughout the state without the use of public funds.

Isabel Bedolla, of Zillah, is a realtor providing assistance for monolingual Spanish-speaking families. Her term expires on June 30, 2003.

Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission

The commission determines eligibility of candidates for licensure examination or registration and establishes criteria, standards and curricula for approved nursing schools.

Appointed to additional terms on the commission are Rebecca Kerben, of Albion, a licensed practical nurse at Whitman Hospital and Medical Center; and Cheryl Payseno, of Seattle, a vice president of Franciscan Health System

Both terms expire June 30, 2004.

Jail Industries Board

The board helps local jail programs develop, implement and maintain jail work programs.

Debra Latimer, of Wenatchee, is a corrections sergeant in a regional jail. Her term expires on February 15, 2001.

Optometry Board

The board examines candidates for licensure or registration, holds disciplinary hearings, and adopts rules and regulations to promote safety and protect the public welfare.

Appointed to an additional term on the board is Bernice Hoptowit, of Wapato, a retired grade school teacher. Her term expires on September 15, 2003.
