Everett Station will be transportation, education and community model hub, Locke says

EVERETT - The new Everett Station will be a model transportation, education and community hub that will spur new development in the city, Gov. Gary Locke said today.

Locke participated in groundbreaking ceremonies for the 64,000-square-foot building scheduled to be completed in December 2001. The facility will be a transportation hub for commuters and other travelers using trains, buses, taxicabs, carpools and shuttles.

The upper floors will host classes for several state colleges and universities, as well as career development services. The facility also will serve as a center for community events.

"This multi-modal, multi-use facility will be much greater than the sum of its bricks and mortar, plumbing and wiring, or windows and furniture," Locke said of the novel facility.

In addition to its education and community functions, Locke said the station would promote important train and bus systems as an important transportation alternative.

"Transit is one of our best tools for curbing traffic congestion on our highways and city streets. The Washington Transportation Alliance says that if every person who currently uses transit in the Puget Sound had to get back to his or her own car, we'd have a 350-mile-long bumper-to-bumper traffic jam that would stretch from Everett to Montana," Locke said.

In his remarks, Locke also praised the federal, state, local and private sectors that formed the partnership to make the station possible.
