Locke names Bruce Hilyer to King County Superior Court

SEATTLE- Gov. Gary Locke today named Bruce Hilyer to the King County Superior Court.

In announcing the appointment, Locke said, "Bruce has demonstrated leadership ability and intelligence necessary to adapt to the wide variety of demands placed on superior court judges. We need people with unquestionably solid legal skills, integrity and experience. Bruce has earned the respect of his colleagues, and will make a fine addition to the bench."

Hilyer, 49, is a private practice attorney in Edmonds, specializing in environmental liability and insurance and health law. Hilyer fills a vacancy on the court created by the May 1 resignation of Judge Norma Huggins.

Hilyer served as a former King County deputy prosecutor and counsel to former Seattle Mayor Charles Royer. He also has served on the board of directors of the Washington Environmental Council and currently serves as chair of the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. He served on the Seattle Municipal League Regional Governance Committee and as a coach with the Hillwood Youth Soccer team.

After attending Cornell University, Hilyer earned his law degree from the University of Washington with high honors.

Hilyer's new post carries a salary of $108,300.
