Locke names Art Wang to Court of Appeals, Division 2

TACOMA- Gov. Gary Locke today named Art Wang of Tacoma to a new, seventh position for the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division 2.

In announcing the appointment, Locke said, "Art is a well-rounded person with the legal skills, intellect, integrity and real-life experience necessary to make a top-notch judge. Art is able to quickly grasp complicated issues, take them apart, explain them to others, find and build a consensus solution, articulate it in a well-reasoned opinion and move on. He has proven himself a leader and a scholar, two qualities well-suited for the courts."

Wang, 51, is chief administrative law judge with the Office of Administrative Hearings, an independent state agency that supervises 70 other law judges around the state. Wang served as a member of the House of Representatives for the 27th district, comprising parts of Pierce County, from 1981-1994. He chaired several committees, including commerce and labor, revenue, capital budget and judiciary. He served on the Washington State Judicial Council, the Economic and Revenue Forecast Council and the Legislative Evaluation and Accountability Committee.

Wang graduated from Franconia College in New Hampshire and earned a law degree from the University of Puget Sound Law School with highest honors. He served as staff to the House of Representatives and practiced law for 10 years with a private firm in Tacoma.

He is on the board of the Pierce County AIDS Foundation, is a founding member of the Tacoma City Club, and is a past board member of United Way of Pierce County.

Wang will assume his new post July 1, and the position carries an annual salary of $114,000.
