Teachers win Magic Apple Grants to improve water quality

OLYMPIA - Gov. Gary Locke is giving Magic Apple Grants to 10 teachers in Washington who plan to teach students how to monitor and improve the quality of water in lakes, rivers and streams.

The teachers will use the grants to buy materials and teach students how to measure the flow of water and test for pollutants. The young people also will learn how to restore salmon habitat.

"These grants help support two of the highest priorities in our state - excellent education and a clean environment," said Locke. "The valuable lessons these teachers give in the classroom and along our waterways is exactly what we need to help educate children about science and our responsibilities as environmental stewards."

Magic Apple Grants are funded by the federal Clean Water Act and administered by the state Department of Ecology. They are aimed at helping teachers conduct hands-on activities for students. Statewide, $7,500 in grants will go into 10 classrooms.

"The Magic Apple Grant makes it possible to get more tools into students' hands - and that is what makes the learning come alive for our students!" said grant recipient Eileen McMackin, who teaches at the Environmental and Adventure School in Kirkland.

"The Magic Apple Grant will enable my students to focus on environmental problems and their solutions," said Jennifer Sharp, who teaches at Camas High School.
