Statement from Gov. Gary Locke on the House Democratic Caucus' proposed supplemental budget

Gov. Gary Locke today said the proposed budget by the House Democratic Caucus reflects his fundamental vision that education, public safety, public health and transportation must be top priorities.

"The budget embodies my vision in several important ways," Locke said. "Among them, it puts kids ahead of concrete by taking a significant step toward increasing individual attention to school children. The budget also comes close to reflecting my commitment to protect our children from a lifetime of tobacco addiction, and it helps maintain mass transit systems that are so vital to our elderly, our students and everybody else who can't rely on a private automobile to get around.

"There are some areas of disagreement of course. But given our shared vision of what is important to the citizens of Washington, I'm confident we will be able to work them out to the satisfaction of all of us," Locke said. "I look forward to working with House Democrats to produce a budget that will get us out of Olympia by the March 9 session deadline."
