Locke names Edie as new legislative director

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today appointed Bob Edie as his new legislative director.

Edie comes to the Governor's Office from the Office of Financial Management where he served as the senior executive budget advisor since July 1999.

"The year 2000 Legislative session promises to be challenging," said Locke. "Bob has the experience and skills to help me succeed in making progress on tough issues like education, tax relief and the response to the passage of I-695."

Edie has a strong background in legislative politics and state government. Prior to working for OFM, he worked as the vice president of university relations at the University of Washington. He has also served as senior staff coordinator for the Senate Ways and Means Committee and as senior research advisor on various Senate committees and for the Democratic Caucus.

With the new Legislative session starting next week, Edie said he will get to work right away. "I'm honored to serve the governor in this capacity and look forward to working closely with the legislature in the upcoming session," Edie said.

The legislative director position was most recently held by Marty Brown, who also served as the governor's deputy chief of staff. Brown left the Governor's Office in November to become director of OFM.

Edie, 52, received an master's degree in public affairs from the Hubert H. Humphrey Institute in 1975. He earned his bachelor's degree in history from Stanford University in 1969.

As the governor's legislative director, Edie will earn a salary of $93,000 a year.
